Designing Mobile Apps for Small Screens
Good mobile design is less about squeezing desktop content into a phone and more about choosing what deserves attention first.
Prioritize the first decision
When a user opens an app, the first screen should make the next step clear. For a viewer that may be choosing a file; for a learning app it may be starting a lesson.
Everything else can wait until the main task has begun.
Make touch interactions forgiving
Small controls and crowded rows make mobile apps feel difficult even when the underlying feature is simple. Buttons need enough space, and frequently used actions should be reachable without awkward hand movement.
Clear spacing also improves scanability, which is important when users are moving quickly through a task.
- Use comfortable touch targets
- Keep related actions together
- Avoid showing every advanced option at once
Design for interruptions
Mobile users are often interrupted by calls, notifications, or changing connectivity. Apps should preserve progress where appropriate and make it easy to understand what happened when the user returns.
