How to Keep AI-Assisted Code Maintainable
AI assistance can increase implementation speed without lowering code quality when the project keeps a small surface area, explicit data shapes, and frequent checks.
Keep the source of truth obvious
Content, routes, and configuration should live where another developer would expect to find them. A fast generated solution becomes expensive when the same information is copied across many components.
Clear ownership makes later prompts more precise because the model can work within an understandable boundary.
Prefer small edits
Ask for one behavior change at a time and inspect the diff. Smaller edits make regressions easier to identify and make it possible to keep the useful parts of generated code without accepting unrelated changes.
This is especially important when a project has shared layouts or typed data used by many pages.
- Keep data centralized
- Review each generated diff
- Run checks after meaningful changes
Ownership is the final test
A project is maintainable when its author can explain the important paths and change them without asking the model to rediscover the whole system. Use AI for leverage, then keep the resulting code understandable enough to own.
